Beauty Trends of the year

In 2021, a lot has changed in terms of how we take care of ourselves. It’s a whole new world for wellness, from how we apply our makeup to how we work out. But that’s not all: thanks to our changing lifestyles and technological advancements, there’s been a significant shift in trends in injectables, skincare, and beauty tech in the last year. That’s why we spoke with Dr. Shweta, who has one of Indiranagar’s best skin clinics, to learn more about what their patients are asking for in 2021—and why. She tells us what’s new in this section.

Fillers are becoming more sophisticated

Dr.Shweta believes that injectables are still popular, but they’re less about treating features and more about treating faces—doing small bits in various places. It’s not about staying the same for a long time; it’s about making small changes frequently.

Dermal fillers, which can add volume to facial features, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve bags and dark circles under the eyes, have made significant progress in the last year. New injectables and technology are constantly being introduced to the market.

Restylane Contour, a new hyaluronic acid filler designed to give a natural bounce to the cheeks without the stiffness with heavier filler products, is one of the most anticipated. The patented Restylane XpresHAn technology, which allows the filler to move dynamically with facial movement, sets it apart from other hyaluronic fillers.

RHA’s products, like Restylane Contour, are intended for the mid-face and to move more dynamically with expression. Your doctor can guide you through these options based on your goals and their most familiar brands.

However, new formulas aren’t the only thing that’s changing the way derms use filler. While fillers are occasionally used ‘off-label,’ that is, in areas of the face and neck where they haven’t explicitly been cleared—for example, Restylane Kysse gets particularly formulated for plumping and defining the lips.

Dr. Shweta adds that “the most recent approval is for chin augmentation using Restylane Defyne and Juvéderm Voluma, two of the most popular fillers already used in-clinic.”

A recessed chin can make the nose appear more prominent, and the lips appear out of proportion, and this new approval gives us more power to address the entire face’s proportions.

Jaw work reigns due to Zoom culture

t’s clinic.

Now that working from home is more common, our online persona influences how we see ourselves—and what we ask for at the dermatologis

“Some patients are distressed by what they see on the monitor. Everyone can control the angle of their selfie in a static image, and they know exactly where to look and position their head for the desired result. Still, suddenly, they’re dynamic on camera, and they see expressions they never knew they made,” says Dr.Shweta

The masseter muscle, which connects your cheekbone to your lower jaw bone, can be temporarily paralyzed with Botox injections, which can relieve the following:

  • Tension
  • Headaches
  • And other jaw pain.

A triple threat in K-beauty is changing people’s faces for the better. For years, micro-needling has been a go-to treatment for acne scars, fine line reduction, and overall skin texture improvement. Derms have recently used micro-needling combined with radiofrequency all over the body as an alternative to more invasive and expensive lasers.

The Aquagold Fine Touch

It combines the advantages of micro-needling, fillers, and Botox in a single anti-aging treatment. It’s the same as micro-needling! The device pricks the skin and causes micro-injuries to the dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin production to heal them.

Small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler, Botox, and vitamins are stamped into the skin on a surface level by the Aquagold device. Rather than augmenting features or paralyzing muscles, injectables plump and tighten the skin for a radiant complexion, and they absorb even better thanks to the micro-injuries caused by the needles.

Body contouring has just gotten a lot better

Emsculpt, the device that tones your abs without you having to exercise, is probably something you’ve seen on Tiktok or Instagram, strapped to celebrities, athletes, and even influencers. That isn’t entirely correct. The machine uses HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic) energy to contract your muscles at a high rate, which your provider will strap to whichever body part you’re targeting. In just one hour, you can do about 20,000 crunches if you use it on your abdomen.

Emsculpt is still the most popular body contouring technology. However, the device’s newest iteration, the Emsculpt Neo, is now available in many locations across the country. The upgraded device improves efficacy by adding radiofrequency heat to the treatment’s muscle-sculpting abilities.

The heat not only increases the muscle development of the machine by 25%, but it also melts fat and tightens the skin for more visible results. While the device’s most popular applications are the abdomen and buttocks, smaller attachments have recently been developed to target the arms, calves, inner thighs, outer thighs, and ‘love handles.’

The minimum number of sessions required to see actual results is four once-weekly sessions. However, the more sessions you have, the more noticeable the change will be.  You’ll leave the clinic feeling like you’ve just worked out at the gym, even if it’s not necessary.

The treatment of melanin-rich skin is becoming more holistic

Hyperpigmentation remains a significant problem in the skin of people of color, but oral therapy has made tremendous progress. The specialists will prescribe a three-month course of tranexamic acid, which will be used with laser and topical therapies.

The best results come from combining several lasers in one overall session, such as 1064 wavelength pico, ND: YAG, and Clear and Brilliant, which has proven to make a massive difference in skin-of-color patients. It’s also done in a very safe manner.

Specific lasers can’t be used on patients of color because melanin-rich skin is more easily affected by their power (your derm can direct you to the proper treatment based on your skin’s tone and condition). Patients of color can now better supplement these safe treatments with products designed specifically for their skin types.

“Skincare and skincare design for people of color are now at the forefront,” says Dr. Shweta. There has been a significant increase in the number of skincare lines explicitly created for people of color. Products like Eadem’s heritage-botanical-infused formulas are designed to address the skincare industry’s long-standing neglect of melanated skin.
