People usually overlook lighting when they renovate. Lighting is very important to set the right tone and atmosphere. You can invest in good furniture and contrast it with a nice wall paint job, but the final touch that makes all the difference is the lighting. How to Choose Lighting For Your Home.
There are many types of light sources you can choose. Besides the atmosphere you also need to consider functionality, brightness and the type of room. I wanted to learn more about allocating my light sources properly so I sent my questions over to LF Illumination and here’s what I learned.
Types of Lighting
Before you start looking for options it is important to note that there are generally three types of lighting for your home; ambient, task and accent.
Ambient or general lighting is the primary light source in any room. It is located in the center usually hanging from the ceiling and provides basic illumination. Depending on the room and type of activities you can adjust the strength, light color, position, height.
Task lighting is used for a particular activity where a strong source of light is necessary. Bathrooms and kitchens are usually equipped with task lighting as bright light and precision are valued. It can also be used in a garage or wherever some sort of manual labor is performed.
Accent lighting is decorative in its nature. It doesn’t provide any functionality aside from aesthetics. It is used to mark certain objects that you would like to emphasize, or create a focal point. People usually add accent lighting to paintings, fire places, tables, book shelves, or anything they find interesting for visitors to focus on.
Designing Each Room
There’s plenty of choice considering what kind of light you want and which source to use to achieve that. It can be hard to translate your idea into practice, especially if you lack experience. It is always good to talk to a professional and let them give you some guidelines and help you decide what suits best. Let’s see what design options to regard for every room:
Living Room
This is a place where you need to feel cozy and create a warm and homey atmosphere. Ambient lighting is the proper choice since you want a balanced source that’s going to provide relaxation. You can use chandeliers, pendants, ceiling fans. If there’s a lot of shadows or you want to highlight a specific element like a painting or a vase you can use track lighting, and easily direct the light to where you want.
Kitchen
The Kitchen is more nuanced, because it can incorporate different activities from cooking to doing homework. It nets both ambient and task lighting in the shape of pendants that can hang directly above areas. Under cabinet lighting is very useful as it takes up space that’s never used anyway and provides enough utility for cooking.
Bedroom
Similar to the living room. Bedroom is used for resting, but every now and then you might need a stronger ambient light. A flush lighting or semi flush lighting will do just fine. Bedroom might also need a small task lighting for reading. Table lamps can provide a concentrated beam of light that’s not going to bother anyone else.
Dining Room
Besides the living room, the dining room is also a place where the family and guests would gather to sit down and eat, relax, play games, and spend time together. With that in mind you can opt for chandeliers accompanied with table lamps. You can also add a dimmer that allows you to manipulate the brightness for different occasions.
